A package is a single number covering several garments, and the single number is the problem: it hides the cloth tier, the construction and the number of fittings. The shop has six, from 5,000 THB: here is what each one fixes, what it leaves open, and how to read any package you are offered anywhere.

01

The six packages

Each package is priced on the standard cloth books and built from the shop’s own starting prices: a suit from 6,000 THB, trousers from 2,000 THB, a shirt from 1,200 THB. The saving is a shirt given free or a round figure off the total.

Choosing premium cloth moves a suit to 12,000 to 22,000 THB, and the package moves by the same difference; the saving stays. The Wedding Party price applies to four people or more dressed for the same wedding. A package still names quantities rather than a specification.

What gets left out

Five things a package price usually leaves out, and where the shop’s own packages stand on each:

  • Which cloth. Usually a restricted selection, which is reasonable, but you should know which books are in and which are out. Here the packages are priced on the standard books; ask at the order which books count as premium.
  • Canvassed or fused. The difference that shows in three years. Every jacket here is canvassed, in a package or not.
  • How many fittings. The commonest silent cut. Two fittings are standard here, and a package suit is an ordinary suit.
  • Whether the pattern is drafted for you or adjusted from a block. Drafted, and kept.
  • Alterations afterwards, and whether any are included. Ask at the order whether alterations are included with a package.

None of those is dishonest on its own. A restricted cloth selection is how a package is possible at all, and a shop that tells you which books are in is being straight with you. The difficulty is only that one number cannot carry five decisions, so it ends up compared against another number carrying different ones. Ask which of the five the package fixes and which it leaves open, and the two become comparable.

03

Is a package cheaper

Here, yes, against the same items at the same starting prices: the Starter is 7,000 THB against 8,400 THB separately, the Two-Suit Wardrobe 13,900 THB against 16,800 THB, and a wedding party of four is 24,000 THB with four shirts rather than 28,800 THB. The specification does not change, which is the part that makes the comparison fair.

Elsewhere, against the same specification, a package is usually cheaper too. Against a different specification, the question is meaningless — and that is the trap. A package at a lower number than a single suit elsewhere may be a fused jacket in a restricted cloth with one fitting, which is a different product rather than a better deal. Price the specification, not the quantity.

The arithmetic is worth doing out loud. Divide the package by the number of garments to get a figure per suit. Then ask what one suit costs at the same shop, on the same cloth, with the same construction and the same number of fittings. If the second question cannot be answered, the first number has nothing to be compared against, and the saving is a saving against an unknown.

What to ask

  1. Which cloth books are included, by name?
  2. Is the jacket canvassed, and full or half?
  3. How many fittings are in the price?
  4. Is the pattern drafted for me or adjusted from a block?
  5. What happens if it does not fit when I get home?

Those five turn any package into a comparable number. Ask them here too: three are answered above, and the cloth books and the alterations are worth having in writing on the order sheet. The wider question is on a bespoke suit’s price, and the specification itself on where the money goes.

Questions people ask

Do you offer a suit and shirts package?
Yes, six. The Starter is a suit and two shirts for 7,000 THB; Business Week adds a second pair of trousers and a third shirt for 9,900 THB; the Two-Suit Wardrobe is two suits and four shirts for 13,900 THB; the Premium Set is a premium suit, premium trousers and two shirts from 15,900 THB; a Wedding Party of four or more is 6,000 THB per person with a shirt each; and Five Shirts is 5,000 THB. All are priced on the standard cloth books.
What is usually left out of a package price?
Which cloth books are included, whether the jacket is canvassed or fused, how many fittings are in the price, whether the pattern is drafted for you or adjusted from a block, and what happens about alterations afterwards. A single number hides all five. Ask all five and write the answers down, because the number alone tells you none of them.
Are packages cheaper?
These are: the Starter is 7,000 THB against 8,400 THB for the same items separately, with the same canvassed jacket and two fittings. Elsewhere, against the same specification, usually yes. Against a different specification the question is meaningless, and that is the trap: a package priced below a single suit elsewhere may be a fused jacket in a restricted cloth with one fitting, which is a different product rather than a better deal. Price the specification rather than the quantity. Two shirts and a suit is an amount, not a description of what you are buying.
What should I ask before buying one?
Five questions. Which cloth books are included, by name. Canvassed or fused — and if canvassed, how far up. How many fittings that number covers. Drafted for you, or a block adjusted to you. What the remedy is if the fit fails once you are home. Answer those five and two packages can be set against each other. Write the answers on the order sheet. A package is the kind of purchase where the disagreement, if there is one, comes at collection.
Is a package a bad idea?
No. It removes a decision and it is usually genuinely cheaper than the same items bought separately. It becomes a bad idea when the number is the only thing you compare, because quantities are the least important thing about a suit. It is a good idea when you have compared it against the same specification bought separately, and a bad one when you have compared it against nothing.
Should I buy several shirts at once?
It is reasonable, and five are 5,000 THB rather than 6,000 THB. The better reason is the pattern rather than the discount: once you have been measured, the second and third shirts start at the cloth rather than the tape measure. That also means nothing is lost by starting with one and coming back.
Can I mix a suit and alterations in one order?
Alterations are ordinary work here and are quoted on the garment in front of you, so bring anything you want looked at to the same visit. Ask in the shop whether that combines into one price.
What does any of it cost?
A suit from 6,000 THB, trousers from 2,000 THB, a shirt from 1,200 THB, and the packages above from 5,000 THB. You get the exact number before anything is cut, which is the part that matters.

What a customer said

5 out of 5 stars

My entire family made suits and shirts with The Loft Tailors. Very good value and Mr Sun was very helpful with the whole process. The turnaround was extremely quick, and the shop is located at the station next to MBK which is really convenient. Will definitely return!
