Tailored trousers, cut to your measurements

Trousers on their own, cut to your measurements at BTS National Stadium. Rise, pleats and finish decided at the order.

Bespoke trousers: cut from a pattern drafted to your own measurements, and ordered on their own. Rise, leg, break and waist finish are all yours to decide, and the pattern is kept afterwards — which is why a first pair of trousers is the sensible way to try a tailor.

01

Trousers on their own

Trousers alone are a normal order, not a favour. They are also the cheapest way to find out whether a shop’s work suits you: one garment, two to three days once the pattern is cut, and a fitting that shows you as much about the cut and the finish as a whole suit would. The pattern is kept, so a jacket ordered later begins at the cloth rather than the tape measure, and a second pair a year from now is one message.

02

The decisions at the order

Five decisions are made at the order, before the cloth is cut:

  • Rise — where the waist sits on you.
  • Pleats or flat front.
  • Waist finish — belt loops, side adjusters, or both.
  • Leg width and taper.
  • Cuffs (turn-ups) or a plain hem.

Three of those decisions, and what each option changes:

DecisionOptionWhat it changes
RiseLow, mid or highComfort seated, and whether the shirt stays in
FrontFlat or pleatedRoom through the thigh; pleats give more and read as more traditional
WaistLoops or side adjustersSide adjusters allow a small change without a belt; dinner trousers take no loops

Each one is set out in rise, pleats and the details.

Rise

Rise is the decision that changes how trousers feel all day and the one most often left to chance. A higher rise sits at the natural waist, is more comfortable seated and keeps a shirt in; a lower rise sits on the hip. Say which you want rather than accepting the default.

Pleats

Pleats add room through the thigh and read as more traditional. Flat front is cleaner and less forgiving. Neither is more correct; the choice follows your build and what you do in them.

Finish

Belt loops, side adjusters, or both. Turn-ups add a little weight at the hem, which helps a trouser hang, and they are wrong on dinner trousers.

Cloth

Cloth from the books on the table — Sirano, Cavani, Luiciano and Lord & Taylor. Weight is the decision that matters most in Bangkok, and it is a genuine trade: lighter is cooler and creases sooner, heavier holds a press and hangs better. Put your hand on two of them and the difference is obvious immediately, which is a better basis for the decision than a number would be.

04

Getting the length right

The commonest failure in a pair of trousers is not the fit, it is the length — and it is almost always caused by the same thing: the hem was set against the wrong shoes. Break is measured against a specific heel height, so a trouser hemmed over trainers is short over dress shoes and one hemmed over dress shoes puddles over trainers. Bring the shoes you will actually wear, to the measuring and to the fitting. If a pair is going to be worn with both, say so and the length is set as a compromise on purpose rather than by accident. The rest of the shop: a suit cut to your own pattern, dressing a wedding party, black tie, and the tailor at National Stadium for directions.

Questions people ask

Can I order trousers without a suit?
Yes, and it is a normal order rather than a favour. Trousers alone are also the cheapest way to test a tailor: one garment, two to three days once the pattern is cut, and a fitting that shows you as much about the cut and the finish as a full suit would. The pattern is kept afterwards, so a jacket ordered later begins at the cloth rather than at the tape measure. It is also the quickest way to find out whether the rise and the break suit you.
What rise should I choose?
Higher if you want the waist at your natural waist, which is more comfortable seated and keeps a shirt tucked in; lower if you prefer them on the hip. Rise is the decision that changes how trousers feel all day and the one most often left to the tailor by default. Say which you want. Bring a pair you already own and say whether you want them higher or lower. A garment in the room settles it faster than a description.
Pleats or flat front?
Pleats add room through the thigh and read as more traditional; flat front is cleaner and less forgiving. Neither is more correct. Choose by build and by what you do in them: if you sit all day or have heavier thighs, pleats earn their keep, and if you do not, flat front looks sharper. A single pleat is the middle answer almost nobody asks for, and it suits people who want the room without the fullness.
How long do trousers take?
Two to three days once the pattern is cut, which is the shop’s ordinary turnaround. You stay fully clothed for the measuring. If you are flying out sooner, say so at the order and you will be told plainly what is possible. Ask what date you are being given at the order rather than assuming the standard one.
Why do my trousers always end up the wrong length?
Almost always because the hem was set against different shoes from the ones you wear. Break is measured against a specific heel height, so a trouser hemmed over trainers is short over dress shoes. Bring the shoes you will actually wear to both the measuring and the fitting, and the problem does not arise. If a pair will genuinely be worn with two kinds of shoe, say so and the length is set as a deliberate compromise rather than an accident.
Can you copy a pair of trousers I already own?
Yes, and it works as well as it does with shirts. The garment answers questions a conversation struggles with. Nothing is cut up and the original goes home with you. We will also say where the original was cut in a way we would change, so you can choose between a copy and an improvement.
Belt loops or side adjusters?
Side adjusters allow a small change in the waist without a belt and give a cleaner line under a jacket; belt loops are more versatile day to day. You can have both. The one fixed rule is dinner trousers, which take no belt loops at all and are held by side adjusters or braces. Braces need buttons inside the waistband, which have to be asked for at the order rather than added to a finished pair.
What cloth weight works in Bangkok?
It is a genuine trade rather than a single answer: lighter is cooler and creases sooner, heavier holds a press and hangs better through a long day. Put your hand on two of them in the shop and the difference decides itself. Weight is one of the few things about cloth an untrained hand judges correctly in seconds, so the books on the table answer it faster than a number would.
