Three weeks before

Bring the dress about three weeks before the wedding, not earlier. This is the part that surprises people, and the reason is simple: a dress altered two months ahead is altered to a body that may not be the same one on the day. Three weeks leaves room for two fittings and for the finishing, and it is close enough to the date that what is pinned is what you will wear.

  1. Three weeks out. Bring the dress, the shoes and the underwear you will wear on the day. First fitting, and the work is pinned on you.
  2. Two weeks out. The alterations are made.
  3. One week out. Second fitting, to confirm rather than to discover. Small corrections only by this point.
  4. The last few days. Pressing, and collection.

If your date is closer than three weeks, say so when you call rather than when you arrive. What is still possible depends on the work the dress needs, and that is a conversation to have before the dress is in the shop.

Two fittings

Two, about a week apart. The first is where the real corrections are found and pinned on you; the second confirms them and settles the hem with your shoes on. Both are done with you wearing the dress, which is not negotiable for bridal work — a wedding dress hangs differently on a body than on a hanger, and that difference is the entire job.

The two appointments run as they do for any garment made or altered here; what a first fitting is like describes what happens at each.

What can be changed

Five parts of a wedding dress can usually be changed:

  • Hem, against the shoes you will wear.
  • Waist and bodice, within the seam allowance.
  • Straps and shoulders, so the bodice sits where it should.
  • Bust, through the side and princess seams.
  • Zips, linings and a bustle for the train.

Beading and lace slow everything down, because beads come off by hand along a seam and go back afterwards. Say what the dress is made of when you first ask about timing.

Alteration is not the only option: the shop also cuts new. women’s shirts and trousers covers what is made for women rather than adjusted.

What cannot be changed, at least not without becoming a different job:

  • The neckline shape, once it is built with structure and beading.
  • Anything past the seam allowance the maker left. A dress bought a size small does not become a size larger.
  • The silhouette. An A-line does not become a sheath.

Where the answer is that the dress is the wrong dress rather than the wrong size, you will be told so at the first fitting rather than after the work.

Bringing the dress in

Bringing the dress in takes three steps:

  1. Bring the dress, the shoes and the underwear you will wear on the day — all three change where it sits, and a fitting without them is a fitting against a guess.
  2. Come to the shop inside BTS National Stadium station at exits 3 and 4, open 10am to 9pm every day.
  3. Allow time to put it on properly rather than arriving five minutes before the shop closes.

If others in the party need dressing, ladies suits and women’s tailoring is the same method on the same timetable, and when to start a wedding suit has the countdown for the men.

Questions people ask

When should I bring my wedding dress in?
About three weeks before the wedding, not earlier. A dress altered two months ahead is altered to a body that may not be the same one on the day. Three weeks leaves room for two fittings and the finishing, and it is close enough to the date that what is pinned is what you will wear. Coming in earlier to have the seam allowance checked is still worth doing, because how far a particular dress can move is the one thing nobody can answer without seeing it.
How many fittings does a wedding dress need?
Two, about a week apart. The first finds the real corrections and pins them on you; the second confirms them and settles the hem with your shoes on. Both are done with you wearing the dress, which is not negotiable for bridal work. Bring the shoes to both. The hem is settled at the second fitting against a specific heel height, and a hem pinned over the wrong shoes has to be done twice.
What can be changed on a wedding dress?
Hem against the shoes you will wear, waist and bodice within the seam allowance, straps and shoulders so the bodice sits where it should, bust through the side and princess seams, zips, linings, and a bustle for the train. Beading and lace slow all of it down, because beads come off by hand and go back on. Say what the dress is made of when you first ask about timing, because beading and lace change the answer completely rather than adding a day to it.
What should I bring?
The dress, the shoes and the underwear you will wear on the day. All three change where the dress sits, and a fitting without them is a fitting against a guess. Allow time to put it on properly rather than arriving just before the shop closes. If anyone else in the party is being fitted, bring them on the same visit: it is one trip rather than several and keeps the whole family on a single timetable.
Can you take in a dress that is too big?
Usually, and taking in is the easier direction. How far depends on the construction: a heavily boned or beaded bodice limits what can be moved without rebuilding it. Bring it in and you will be told what is possible before any work starts.
Can you let a wedding dress out?
Only as far as the seam allowance the maker left, and wedding dresses vary enormously in that. Some carry a generous inlay, some almost none. It can be checked in about a minute, which is a good reason to come in early even if the alteration itself waits until three weeks out.
Do you add a bustle for the train?
Yes, it is a normal part of bridal alteration work. Bring the dress and say how you want to move in it after the ceremony, because the bustle arrangement follows from that rather than from the dress alone.
Can the rest of the wedding party be fitted too?
Yes. Women’s tailoring, jackets, trousers, shirts and dresses, is made and altered here on the same method and timetable, and the men’s wedding suits run on their own three-week countdown. Bringing the party in together is the easiest way to keep one family on one schedule.
