Ordering from abroad

Ordering from outside Thailand: what works when the shop has measured you before, what is genuinely risky when it has not, and what to ask first.

Ordering from outside Thailand is possible in some situations and genuinely risky in others. It is still ordering a bespoke suit, and the difference is whether this shop has ever measured you. Below is which is which, and what to ask the shop.

01

What is possible

Three situations, and they are not equally good — because bespoke tailoring depends on measurements checked on your body, not just taken.

  • You have ordered here before. Your pattern is kept, so a repeat order starts from a pattern that has already been fitted on you. This is the case that works.
  • You are coming to Bangkok soon. Choose cloth and agree the order now, be measured when you land. This shortens your trip rather than replacing it.
  • You have never been measured here and are not coming. This is the hard case, set out below.

The shop ships finished garments abroad. Ask on WhatsApp which countries, what it costs and how long it takes before you plan around it.

Once you land, the schedule is the ordinary one: the fitting schedule counts the days.

If a finished suit reaches you and is not right, if it does not fit covers it, and when you pay, and how much lists what to settle before anything is cut.

02

Choosing cloth by photo

A photograph tells you colour and pattern, roughly. It tells you nothing about weight or handle, which are the two things that decide whether a cloth is right for where you live. Ask for the book name and a photograph in daylight rather than under shop lights, say what climate the suit is for, and accept that you are choosing with less information than someone standing at the table. If you are coming to Bangkok at all, choose cloth in person and order everything else in advance.

For a short trip, the twelve-hour express is the alternative, and a visit to your hotel removes the journey to the shop entirely.

03

If you have ordered before

This is the case ordering remotely is actually for. Your pattern was drafted from your body and corrected at two fittings, so a second suit from it starts from something that has already been proved on you. Message the shop with what you want and the cloth, and the conversation is short. Ask how long the shop keeps a pattern, particularly if it has been a while. the pattern kept on file explains what it is and why it matters.

04

The risk

If nobody here has measured you, a remote order is a garment cut to numbers that were taken by someone else, or by you, and never checked on your body by the person cutting it. No fitting happens before it is finished. That is a real risk: a suit that arrives wrong is a suit you cannot easily bring back. If you are going to do it anyway, measuring yourself is the careful version, and it says plainly where self-measurement goes wrong.

Questions people ask

Can I order a suit from outside Thailand?
It depends entirely on whether this shop has measured you before. If it has, your pattern is on file and a repeat order starts from something already proved on your body, which is the case remote ordering genuinely works for. If it has not, nobody here has seen you and no fitting happens before the suit is finished. That is a real risk. If there is any chance of a trip to Bangkok, agree the cloth and the style in advance by message and be measured when you land. That removes the risk entirely.
Do you ship finished suits abroad?
Yes, the shop ships finished garments abroad. Ask on WhatsApp at 085 048 7655 which countries, what it costs and how long it takes before you plan around it. Ask it in the same message as the price, because a quote that does not include getting the suit to you is only part of the figure you are deciding on.
How do I choose cloth if I cannot see it?
Ask for the name of the book and for a photograph taken in daylight rather than under shop lights. Then accept that you are choosing with less information than someone standing at the table: a photograph shows colour and pattern and tells you nothing about weight or handle, which are the two things that decide whether a cloth suits where you live. Say what climate the suit will be worn in and what season, because weight is the property a photograph cannot carry and the one that decides comfort.
Can I send measurements taken by another tailor?
Send them, and send photographs with them. Numbers taken by someone who measures daily are worth considerably more than numbers you took yourself. What no set of numbers carries is how you stand, which is what a fitting reads. Write the units out explicitly, because a mixed set of centimetres and inches is the commonest and most expensive error in remote ordering. Take the photographs front, back and side, standing straight in a close-fitting top.
What if the suit arrives and does not fit?
That is the risk. A suit that arrives wrong is a suit you cannot easily bring back, and altering it locally changes what can be done with it afterwards. Message the shop first with photographs, front, back and side, before anyone touches it. If you are returning to Bangkok, bring it: the pattern is still here, which is the whole advantage.
Is it better to just wait until I visit Bangkok?
Almost always, yes. A suit takes two to three days on the bench, and even a short trip allows a proper order with fittings. Agree the cloth and the style in advance by message, then be measured when you land; that gets you the benefit of planning ahead without the risk of being cut for by numbers alone. Even a two-day trip allows both fittings if you are measured on the first morning, which is more than most people assume is possible.
How long does a remote order take?
The making is the same two to three days. Everything else depends on the conversation and on shipping. Ask at the start rather than midway, and get the shipping answer in the same message as the price. Build in time at your end too: a garment that clears customs slowly is still a garment you do not have.
How long is my pattern kept?
Ask the shop. A pattern exists after your first order, and a second suit starts from it rather than from the tape measure. Ask before you plan a repeat order around it, particularly if it has been a few years, because the answer decides whether you are ordering or starting again.

What a customer said

5 out of 5 stars

My partner and i came across The Loft whilst staying in the Pathwan princess hotel in the summer of 2018, we ordered a suit and shirt to be made, the whole process was effortless, staff very attentive, we chose a style and customised to my preference, the fabric was lovely , we chose a cashmere light weight wool.
